Fishing The Dismal Swamp Canal
Fishing The Dismal Swamp Canal. The system has plenty of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and white perch. The Dismal Swamp Canal and the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal form alternate routes along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) between the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle Sound.
It is the oldest man-made waterway having sustained continuous operations. On our first day visiting the Swamp we circumnavigated the entire thing, visiting both the Fish and Wildlife headquarters on the VA side and the NC State Park's Visitor Center. As it was built on a former state highway, the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail provides a wide, paved and flat pathway along its namesake waterway and the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge.
The canal enabled North Carolina producers of building and agricultural products to deliver goods to the Port of Norfolk where they were transferred to ocean-going vessels.
The Dismal Swamp canal route to Abermale Sound is a scenic alternative to the more travelled Currituck Sound route.

The canal was dug completely by hand; most of the labor was done by slaves hired from nearby landowners.
